How to use the calculator

1. Select bullet weight in grams (usually 0.20g, 0.25g or 0.28g).
2. Enter the speed you measured in either FPS or m/s.
3. Select the correct device from the drop-down menu.
4. Press Calculate to get the result in both FPS, m/s and joules.

Why is muzzle velocity important in airsoft?

The muzzle velocity determines how much energy the bullet hits with. In airsoft, this must be kept within safe limits to avoid injuries and to comply with regulations.

Security

Always wear approved protective equipment when playing airsoft. Excessive muzzle velocity can cause injuries, especially at short distances. Many clubs have their own FPS and joule limits for different types of weapons, such as snipers, rifles and pistols.

Competition rules

In Norway, it is common to have a maximum of 1.2 joules for indoor games and 2 joules for outdoor games, but this can vary. Always check the rules where you are going to play.

Formula for calculating joules

The physical formula for calculating impact energy in joules is:

Joule = 0.5 × (ball weight in kg) × (m/s × m/s) 

To convert from FPS to m/s, multiply the number by 0.3048.
