Different types of airguns – which airgun type is right for you?
Air rifles come in several technical variants – each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the difference between spring-operated, CO2, PCP, pump and nitro piston models. With the right knowledge, you can choose the air rifle that is best suited for hunting, target shooting or hobby use.
Spring-powered air rifles
The classic among airguns. By breaking the barrel or using the charging arm, a spring is charged that drives the bullet. Durable, affordable and easy to use. Perfect for beginners and recreational shooting.
PCP air rifle
These use compressed air from a pre-filled tank and provide low recoil, high precision and good range. Suitable for hunting and competition. Can be charged with PCP pump or compressor.
Pump-action rifle
Integrated pump mechanism gives full control over power and number of shots. Easy to use and affordable to operate – perfect for those who want it simple and reliable.
Nitro/Vortex piston air rifle
Similar to spring-operated models, but uses a gas piston instead of a spring. Provides smoother shooting, lower noise and less recoil. Requires no refilling and is very durable.
CO2-powered air rifle
Uses 12g or 88g CO2 cartridges. Ideal for semi-automatic or full-auto models. Remember to use proper maintenance and accessories for optimal performance and lifespan.
Choose the right air rifle – ask yourself:
- What will you use the weapon for – hobby, hunting or competition?
- How important are recoil, noise level and precision to you?
- Do you want ease of use, or more advanced features?
