Softgun rules in Norway – Everything you need to know about laws, safety and games

Softguns are realistic replicas that shoot 6mm plastic bullets. They are used in airsoft games and target shooting, but are subject to Norwegian weapons law and specific rules from the Norwegian Airsoft Federation (NASF). Here you will get an updated overview of what applies to purchase, use and safety in 2025.

What is a soft gun?

A softgun is an air, gas or spring-powered replica weapon that fires 6mm plastic pellets (BBs). They come in three main types: spring-powered, electric (AEG) and gas/CO2 powered. Softguns are used in organized games and as a hobby, but should be treated with the same respect as real weapons.

Is softgun legal in Norway?

Yes, but softguns are regulated by the Weapons Act §2-3 and are not classified as a toy. There are requirements regarding age, storage and transportation. In addition, NASF regulations and applicable laws, including the Pollution Act, must be followed.

Age limit for softgun

You must be 18 years to buy softgun in Norway. Players under 18 years of age can participate in airsoft games under the supervision of a responsible adult. NASF recommends a minimum age of 14 years for participation in organized games.

How to transport a softgun

  • Softguns should never be displayed in public – always carry them in a bag or briefcase
  • The magazine must be empty and removed from the weapon.
  • Use dedicated gun case or bag
  • When transported in a car, the weapon must be concealed and inaccessible to the driver.

Where can you play airsoft?

Airsoft games must take place in approved areas with permission from the landowner or police. There are clubs all over the country that organize games - private games also require a permit. NASF has a club map where you can find your nearest club.

Is softgun safe? Yes, with the right protective equipment!

To play safely, you must use safety glasses that comply with the ANSI Z87+/EN 166 F standard. The goggles must fit tightly enough that no 6mm bullet can penetrate. In addition, face protection is recommended – especially for teeth and nose. NASF has developed a common set of regulations that all their clubs follow, including requirements for approved safety equipment.

In summary – this is what you need to know
